Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was a barrier which divided the East and West of Berlin from 1961 to 1989. The wall made it very difficult for the people of Berlin to cross the East West border, there were 12 checkpoints built along the wall which soldiers guarded. First built using barbed wire the wall was eventually 12 foot tall and 4 foot wide, topped with a huge pipe which made climbing it very difficult, in fact over 170 people were killed trying to get over the wall. In 1989 when the cold war began, it was decided that citizens were free to cross the border and the wall began to be destroyed. The survived sections of the wall can still be seen today displaying artwork from over 100 artists.
